Speculative Design

In this project, we had to look 1,000 years into the future and speculate on a certain topic, I chose to look at nutrition and tried thinking of a pessimistic way nutrition will be affected. For this project, I did a wide range of research to conceptualise this idea fully, looking at how it has been viewed in history and how it had cultural and spiritual connotations. I also got a lot of feedback from others saying that it was a very taboo subject which meant that it was very difficult to reason why nutrition should take place in this way, but with the current state of climate change, it seeming to only get worse our crops are going to be affected and with fewer crops how are we going to feed our livestock where would we get the protein from?

  • Thought about the future of Nutrition

    I made a mind map of different ways that we could get our nutrients in the future, I thought the most interesting way would be cannibalism so I went with that.

  • Defining The Scope

    I had to define what I would look at and how I would research around my topic with a specific scope. I chose to look at cannibalism and how that has been depicted in media and throughout history.

  • Legality of Cannibalism

    I did a variety of research into cannibalism and the history around it.

  • Speculative Project

    In the future climate change will decimate our crops and leave food sources scarce. With few crops we wont be able to feed any animals so our sources of protein will be few and far between. This will lead to a food shortage and in trying times whos to say where we get our protein from in the future?

  • Broadsheet Idea

    I wanted to do an interesting fold for my broadsheet as it was an interesting topic so I looked at complex ways of folding a broadsheet. I settled on a twist fold as when it was being opened up it felt like mouth consuming.

    This is the final outcome of the project. It is a book about how I did the project and the research that went into it’s creation.
